Alt Name¶
This condition located on the Personal category tab in Search Builder allows you to search for people by their Atl (alternative) Name, using all of part of the name.
The Alt Name was created for Chinese churches to use so they could enter the Chinese name in the Alt Name field. However, you can also use this field if you have people in your database that sometimes use one last name and sometimes use another. One case in point would be a child whose mom has remarried. Sometimes they register the child using the dad’s last name, but sometimes they use the mom’s new last name.
Another use case for an Alt Name is someone that has their Maiden Name in the Former Name field, but has been married more than once. You can put the previous married name in the Alt Name.

Using Ranges
The search will look at the entire name,
so be careful when using <= or <= and a letter.
If you want one group whose names start with A
through names that start with M
,
use Before N
.
Another Reminder
The system will consider all the letters in the name.
So, when using Equals N
, for example, you will literally get only those
whose last name is N, not Nance or Naylor.
You could, however, use After or Same
and the letter N
and return those whose last name begins with an N
or any other subsequent letter of the alphabet.
If you also add Before or Same
and the letter P
, you would get those who names
begin with N or O, and anyone whose names was exactly P.
But you would not get those whose last name is Patt or Passon.
